After extensive archival work, I chose images which I then rebuilt using traditional and digital techniques. "Skewed" invention was designed to defamiliarize the viewer from a given historical representation for three important reasons. First, it peels away the orientalist aura which still clings to the archive's representations of people who just happen to be geographically or chronological distant from us. Second, it foregrounds the visual codes which signify notions of the past and of culture. And third, my invented histories give a voice to otherwise oft-marginalized subaltern realities. These invented realities proffer a mystery that stands against the nauseating beige mish-mash of our rationalized era.
